Evernote, a note-taking and organization app, can capture audio recordings for future use and transcribe them automatically. However, considering the inaccuracies of AI, is that the best option? Reputable human transcription companies can beat AI transcription accuracy rates, hands down. Evernote’s automatic transcription might be free and convenient, but it might not be the best option for professional use.
In this article, you’ll learn how:
- You can record and transcribe directly in Evernote using either the built-in recording tool or by uploading your audio files. Just use the accepted format.
- Automatic transcription is fast, but its raw output is far from good, so expect to spend time editing your transcripts.
- When accuracy matters most, human transcription services should be your first option. Professionals offer better results and can handle tricky elements like multiple speakers and technical terms.

How to Transcribe Audio in Evernote
Currently, there are two primary ways to transcribe your audio in Evernote, both with its automatic transcription feature.
Record Directly in Evernote
Assuming you’re using a browser and are already signed in, this is how the main dashboard should look or something similar (especially if your account is new like mine):
So, to start recording with Evernote, you’ll need to locate that feature, which can be found after clicking the three dots beside the Note option (the green one). See the red arrow below:
Once done, a set of additional options will appear, and one of those should be Audio with a microphone icon beside it.
Once you click the Audio option, it will automatically start recording, and it should appear like this:
I ran the test for almost a minute, but I didn’t record anything important. Once you’re done recording, simply click the pause or stop button. See image:
After hitting pause, Evernote will save your audio recording, and it will be ready for transcription. It should appear like this:
From there, you can create a title for the file, click the transcribe button (as pointed out by the red arrow), and wait until it’s finished.
However, AI powers Evernote’s automatic transcription feature, and according to research, AI transcriptions can only be 61.92% accurate at BEST conditions – crystal clear recording, perfect pronunciation, easy-to-understand accents, no background noise, no multi-speaker, jargon, niche terms, etc.
So, expect to dedicate a lot of time to polishing and editing the transcripts for recordings where accuracy is crucial.
Uploading Existing Audio Files
Another option to transcribe audio with Evernote is to upload an existing file. Again, locate the three dots beside the green “Note” button on the left-hand side of the screen.
Then, click the “File” option with the attachment icon beside it.
Evernote will then prompt you to choose the audio file. Also, Evernote only accepts common formats like MP3, MP4, FLAC, and WAV files.
After you choose the file, Evernote will start uploading your audio and transcribing it as soon as possible. The time it takes to finish, however, will vary according to the length of the recording. It’s not very complicated.
A More Reliable Way To Transcribe Files From Evernote
For sure, transcribing with AI, like Evernote’s transcription feature, is easy. However, correcting the mistakes they make to your transcripts is anything but easy. It’s frustrating and time-consuming – especially with hours-long recordings. I’ve learned this the hard way.
That’s why I recommend investing in a professional transcription service whenever you need accurate transcriptions. The costs are significantly less than hiring in-house, with some estimates suggesting potential savings up to 60%.
Professional transcription companies are more cost-efficient than hiring and retaining transcriptionists, and their expertise in the transcription process also allows them to cover more industries while keeping accuracy rates high.
Human transcription providers are also flexible enough to accommodate requests. Document formatting guidelines, different file formats, storage options – you name it, a reliable transcription service like Ditto can provide it.
