Disclosure: Ditto Transcripts publishes this guide, and Ditto is one of the eight services reviewed. We chose the scoring criteria, so we explain every one of them below and apply them the same way to every provider, Ditto included. Every fact about another company comes from that company’s own website or its Google Business Profile, checked on the date above, and is cited under its section. Where a provider doesn’t publish something, we say “not published” instead of guessing. We list Ditto’s limitations too.
The best transcription services aren’t the same for everyone. An AI note-taker is a sensible choice for an internal team stand-up. A deposition, a patient dictation, a police interview or a dissertation interview needs a transcript that a person has typed, checked and will stand behind.
This guide compares eight services, from fully human to AI only. It’s written for people whose recordings carry legal, medical, research or privacy weight. If you run a small business and mainly need meeting notes, see our separate guide to the best transcription services for small business.
Quick answer: the best transcription services
The best transcription services for accurate, confidential transcripts are Ditto Transcripts, GMR Transcription and SpeakWrite. That’s based on our 100-point score for human transcription, accuracy guarantees, compliance, confidentiality, pricing transparency and Google rating. Rev is the highest-scoring hybrid option, with human-verified transcripts and a published 99%+ accuracy guarantee. Otter.ai is the AI option for internal meetings, where a rough transcript is good enough.
Ranked by total score (out of 100):
- Ditto Transcripts (95/100): 100% human, U.S.-based transcriptionists, a 99% accuracy guarantee, HIPAA and CJIS compliance, background checks, and certified transcripts included free.

How we ranked the best transcription services
We scored each service out of 100 on six criteria we could verify on its own website or Google Business Profile. Price and turnaround aren’t scored, because the right trade-off depends on the recording. Both are in the comparison table above so you can weigh them yourself.
| Service | Human | Acc. | Compl. | Conf. | Price | Rating | Pts | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ditto Transcripts | 20 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 15 | 4.9 from 240 reviews | 15 | 95 |

Ditto loses five points on compliance because it doesn’t publish a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 report. TranscribeMe ranks above Otter.ai on the tie because a person edits its transcripts.
| Criteria | Points | How we scored it |
|---|---|---|
| Human transcription | 20 | 20 if a person types the transcript; 10 if software drafts it and a person edits or verifies it; 0 for AI only. |
| Accuracy guarantee | 10 | 10 for a published guarantee of 99% or higher on the standard human service; 5 for an accuracy claim without a guarantee, or a guarantee only on a higher tier; 0 if not published. |
| Compliance | 20 | 5 points each for HIPAA, CJIS, SOC 2 or ISO 27001, and certified transcripts. |
| Confidentiality and staffing | 20 | 5 points each for NDAs or confidentiality agreements for every transcriptionist, signing the customer’s own NDA, published background checks, and a published staff location. |
| Pricing transparency | 15 | 15 if every turnaround, speaker or audio type and add-on is priced on the site; 10 if main rates are published but some options aren’t; 5 for a “starting at” price; 0 for quote only. |
| Google rating | 15 | 15 for 4.8 or higher with 50+ reviews; 11 for 4.5 or higher with 25+ reviews; 5 for any other rated profile; 0 if no profile was found. |
Human vs AI transcription: an honest comparison
AI transcription has improved, and for some jobs it’s the right tool. It’s fast, inexpensive and built into the meeting apps many teams already use. If you need searchable notes from an internal call and nobody will rely on the exact wording, an AI tool like Otter.ai is a reasonable choice.
The gap shows up when the wording matters. In Ditto’s own testing of AI transcription, AI averaged only 61.92% accuracy, compared with the 99% accuracy our human transcriptionists guarantee. Crosstalk, accents, medical and legal terms, poor microphones and background noise are where automated transcripts go wrong. Those are also the recordings most likely to end up in a court file, a patient record or a published study.
Use a human transcription service when:
- The transcript is evidence or a record: depositions, hearings, police interviews and body-cam footage. See our legal transcription services and law enforcement transcription services.
- Protected health information is involved: patient dictation, clinical notes and medical-legal recordings. See our medical transcription services.
- It’s research data: qualitative interviews and focus groups, where a misheard word changes a finding. See our academic transcription services.
- You need it certified, or you’ll publish or quote it.
An AI tool can be enough when the recording is internal, low-risk and you only need the gist.
